2008 Borgata Poker Open WPT Final Table

"This is a sick game.
Jason Strochak
The final table of the 2008 Borgata Poker Open is underway with the final 6 players shooting for the $1,400,000 first place prize. The TV table is set up and the audience has been seated.

Vivek Rajkumar - 6,400,000
Mark Seif - 4,665,000
Dan Heimiller - 3,360,000
Sang Kim - 3,085,000
Jason Strochak - 1,650,000
Andrew Knee - 1,475,000

As the play gets underway there have been some sick hands. Big pairs cracked by underpairs, flopped straight for Jason turned into a chopped pot on the turn and Vivek pulling a +$12,000,000 pot by cracking Mark Seif's AA with tens.

The action has been fast and furious getting down to 4 players just after the first break

6th - Andrew Knee - $237,500
5th - Mark Seif - $287,500

Wednesday, September 17, 2008

End of Day

"And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is The Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee."

Jules - Pulp Fiction
Vivek Rajumar took us down to the final TV table of 6 players.

7th - John Myung - $187,500

The remaining players were relieved and John Myung was left to collect his 8th place money. The railbird are talking to their friends still left in the game and the rest are heading for the tables. It will take a while to get the chips counted and bagged but they final 6 know they'll be playing on the big stage tomorrow afternoon looking to bag just south of a mil and a half.

I'll post the chip counts when they are official and I'll be live blogging from the WPT final table tomorrow afternoon.

Chris Arvantitis out in 8th

And we're down one more player. One more til the TV table is set.

Chris Arvantitis, a Canadian, was Main Event entrant 516 out of 516 after satelliting his way in at the very list minute before registration closed. He took his last minute shot and walked away with $137,500 for his efforts.

8th - Chris Arvantitis - $137,500

End of Level 28

"These are the times that try men's souls"
Thomas Paine
Amen sir. The remaining 9 players were holding onto their chips like they are worth their weight in gold. Since I am unaware of the current price of gold, that might actually be true. No one wants to get this far and fail to make first prize money but it has to happen.

Stephen Vanauken will not be making his television debut when he busted out at the beginning of Level 28.

9th - Stephen Vanauken - $100,000

Mark Seif made a move from big stack to chip leader in a lesson to be learned. SB limped with aces and got burned. For most of his stack.

End of Level 27 - Michael Binger out

The players are either being extremely careful at this point or there is a concerted effort to hypnotize the floor staff then run off with the loot. There's a $35k difference between 9th and 10th and that will certainly buy a ton of Panda Express down in the cafeteria. The one lone bit of excitement was short stacked Michael Binger getting all in with 99 versus AK. 9 on the flop made the flopped ace pointless and Binger doubles up.

The railbirds are still going strong but they look to mostly be friends of the players. The casual looky lou stops in for about 10 minutes before heading back to the tables.

The blinds are going to start catching up with some of the players shortly and things should pick back up.

Mark Seif is the current short stack.

~

I wrote this post, completely ready to publish it then run for the smoking border. Then Michael Binger busted out on the last hand before the break. He will collect $65,000 for his effort and we're down to the final 9.

10th - Michael Binger - $65,000

End of Level 26

Level 26 started out with fireworks having Dannenmann going out early. Then things slowed to a crawl. Nothing outrageous except a hand that belongs in the Ace-Rag Hall of Fame between Heimiller and Myung, Seif tossed his AQ away and the other two chopped the pot.

We're still sitting at 10 players and moving onto Level 27.

Not sure about the players or railbirds, but I personally went on tilt when they turned the TV's in the room from the Phillies game to the cage fighting.

Steve Dannenmann out

Steve Dannenmann was knocked out almost immediately after the break ended. He got in a battle of the blinds against Vivek Rajkumar. Vivek called a million chip raise with AJ, luckily for him Dannenman pushed with A7.

It would have been really interesting to see Dannenman at the WPT TV final table but it will have to happen another time.

The tables have combined with the final 11. One more $65,000 payout and we'll see the first 6 digit prize for the 9th player eliminated.

11th - Steve Dannenmann - $65,000

Dinner break over

Players are back from the dinner break and I see no signs of any food comas. Still sitting at 11 players and they will combine to one table when down to 10.

This is the start of Level 26 with the blinds at 30,000/60,000 5,000 ante.

The current chip leader is Dan Heimiller at 3,695,000 and Michael Binger is the shortstack with 725,000.

End of Level 25

Things picked up a little in this level. Local grinder Nicky Frangos has been nursing a dead stack and dead cards all day until he had to make a move with KQ. "Best hand I've had all day" he said a few hundred times for the poker room to hear. AK had him dominated and he exits. That also things the railbird crowd a bit.

Internet hotshot Thayer "THAY3R" found his stack moving up and down most of the day and was knocked out by his fellow internet pro Vivek "psyduck" Rajkumar.

14th - Patrick Carney - $47,500
13th - Nicky Frangos - $47,500
12th - Thayer Rasmussen - $65,000

Players are heading off on their dinner break and we're still waiting for one more player to bust before they combine the final 10 into the "unofficial" final table.

End of Level 24

The WPT cameras have shown up with a complete crew. That officially puts the tally at more media than players between the two tables. Before now they were using cute little cameras that make for great internet videos but the big cameras and boom mics are here. They seem to be concentrating most of their attention on the table with Dannenmann, Heilmiller and Seif.

It seems a little cruel to expect a player to make a million dollar decision with a huge spotlight in your face.

Dan Heimiller and Mark Seif are staying solid near the top of the chip count and Nicky Frangos is making some noise WITH his chips this time. Picking up some blinds and antes as well as a courtesy double up from one of his opponents. but still keeping up his chatter with the railbirds.

Only one knockout this level and the railbirds are either falling asleep or losing interest. I'm taking this time to decide whether I'm love with the dealer at table one or the new cocktail waitress. God loves a shift change.

15th - Steve Levy - $47,500

End of Level 23

If I thought the action was slow the last level, I had something else coming. Only two busted this level and not a lot of monster pots. Dan Heimiller temporarily gave up his chip lead but quickly got it back with a monster pot versus Vivek Rajkumar. Michael Binger knocked out local favorite Bo Toft in 17th by coming behind with his AQ versus AK. The other local players were disappointed to see him go.

17th - "Bo" Toft - $32,500
16th - Bobby Shasta - $32,500

Nicky Frangos is making noise but not with his chips. As the shortest stack left in the tournament he hasn't been able to get any traction with his open raises regularly getting re-raised. If you've seen Nicky play than you know he's spent as much time talking to the rail than he has playing. Towards the end of the level he pushed in several times without getting any action. He is really trying to push Sang Kim's buttons as he's put a few horrid beats on the rest of the table.

The rail is still growing as the field gets smaller. A few poker widows have shown up to take advantage of the comfy stadium seating. Before long the media members will out number the poker players.

Onto the next round.

End of Level 23

We're down to 2 tables but play definitely slowed down a bit with this level even though it looked ominous when Vihn Nguyen was eliminated at the beginning. Only two other knockouts

20th - Vihn Nguyen - $26,000
19th - Natale Keuy - $26,000
18th - Kevin Lang - $32,500

Once the afternoon moved along we started to see the rail and stands fill up with onlookers. People from all walks of life are straining their necks to get a glimpse of someone they might have seen on TV. And you have the railbirds who are watching their amateur friends make a big score, either for friendship or a piece of the action.

The Borgata staff told a good story today about Chris Arvanitis. Out of 516 players to enter the Main Event, Chris was entrant number 516. He won the very last satellite and enter the tournament nearly 6 hours after the start. He's still sticking around and will make at least $32k for his late entrance.

End of Level 22

Level 22 was a lot crazier than expected. We lost 7 players during the level and just about down to 2 tables. My seat in media row is conveniently situated right next to Deb from the Borgata who is responsible for paying out players when they bust. I get to hear the players story straight from their mouth.

Ted Forrest was the first eliminate and definitely the sickest. Thayer Rassmussen put nearly half his stack at risk with pocket 8's. His two outter on the river cracked the aces for Forrest. He immediately left the area without getting paid. I'm assuming he left to take his frustrations out on some local donkey. He eventually came back to collect and went straight for the high limit area. He collected $26,000 for the effort.

Also eliminated during Level 22:

26th - Ralph Villela - $26,000
25th - Mikiya Takitani - $26,000
24th - Nam Le - $26,000
23rd - Chris Bell - $26,000
22nd - Randy Pfeifer - $26,000
21st - Christopher Baksh - $26,000

Perhaps things will slow now that some of the smaller stacks have been taken out.

Quote heard from chip leader Dan Heilmiller, "I have too many chips to count". Rough life.

Day 4, playing down to the TV table

Day 4 will being shortly as the 27 remaining players try for the nearly $1,500,000 first place prize. The field has earned a combined $29,000,000 in their tournament careers and 8 World Series of Poker bracelets led by the 5 held by Ted Forrest. Chip leader Dan Heimiller has cashed in 32 WSoP events including his 2002 bracelet in the Limit Hold'em/Stud mix game.

End of Day 3

The end of Day 3 came much quicker than anyone anticipate. Play was complete by 8pm with the exit of Borgata regular Vinny Pahuja getting the field down to 27. The action will continue at 11am on Wednesday when they play down to the televised final 6.

Still alive for the nearly $1.5 million first place prize are chip leader Daniel Heimiller, Ted Forrest, Steve Dannenman, Nam Le, Michael Binger, Chris Bell, Mark Seif, and Borgata killer Nicky Frangos.

Back shortly with chip counts, table assignments and mini-bios.

End of Level 20

The end of Level 20 makes us realize that we won't be working until midnight tonight. With 33 palyers we're only 6 bustouts before we reach the mach number of 27.

Some notable matchups:

Ted Forrest, Steve Dannenmann, Kevin Murray

Michael Binger, Vivek Rajkumar, Nam Le

Mark Seif, Vinny Pahuja, Ryan Young

I suspect that we'll probably lose those 6 players during the next 75 minute level.

End of Level 19

End of Level 19 leaves just 41 players in the tournament as they play down to the final 27.

When I got back to the big poker room I found that Tiffany Michelle will not be getting any TV time during the televised WPT Final table.

Ted Forrest does not seem real pleased with the player to his immediate right. A few massive overbets in quick succession has the legend a little out of sorts. I wouldn't be surprised if he decided it was more worth his time to get back down the big cash game running in the Borgata poker room.

Steve Dannenmann doubled up against the player to his left with AK versus AQ and is looking back to healthy. Being completely biased, I hope he makes the TV table.

Borgata tournament regulars Nicky Frangos and Vinny Pahuja (finished 2nd in the Borgata Summer Open) are still around and making their presence known.

There's been a Jimmy "Gobboboy" Fricke siting along the rail. Professional poker player/gambler/drinker/prop bettor Gavin Smith is playing in the Borgata Open $300 tournament and scaring his table mates.

Back with more after Level 20.

The Bubble Bursts

Starting the day with just under 70 players, it only took two levels for the bubble to burst. Top 54 players will make some money and make it a successful tournament. Now players will need to make their moves towards the big money.

Hand for hand didn't last long and the unfortunate bubble boy went out when his aces were cracked by AQ.

Steve Dannemann, Mark Seif, Tiffany Michelle, Tedd Forrest, and Nam Le were a few of the big names the money.

Professional hockey player Scottie Upshall played his Day 3 sitting on the opposite end of the table from uber-player Ted Forrest. Upshall made the money but was knocked out in 52nd place pocketing $15,000 for his charities. He now has to give back the gold plated headphones to Lacey Jones.

Start of Day 3

Approximately 70 players made it through Day 2. They will be trying to make the money today and play down to the final 27.

Flyer right winger Scottie Upshall is still alive but shortstacked, WSoP runner-up Steve Dannenmann is still alive along with big cash game player Ted Forrest. Tiffany Michelle is changing it up between squating on her seat or doing yoga when not in a hand.

They start off on level 17 and won't stop until down to 27 players. I will post the chip count when I get it.

Monday, September 15, 2008

End of Level 13

End of Level 13 and we're right around 100 players left in the field. Big names are still pushing their chips around including Steve Dannenmann, Jamie Gold, Robert Mizrachi, Mark Seif and Tiffany Michelle.

Scottie Upshall's chipstack is staying steady and he mentioned in an interview with World Poker Tour that he is playing for charity. If he cashes, 100% of his winnings will go to charity.

He's also wearing headphones provided by Lacey Jones. And they're gold plated. Below is the WPT video interview.

Ted Forrest is still playing and has been accumulating chips so quietly that I didn't even realize he was in the field.

One more level until the players hit the dinner break and play is creeping along.

Poker examples to live by

There is a reason I am sitting in media row and not playing in a $10k. I obviously don't have the skills to compete at this level but I'm seeing some action that baffles.

A player who bought or satellited his way into the Main Event gets into a pre-flop battle that involved a string bet and two large stacks. Once that was settled the flop came out AA4. Early position player put out a pot sized bet and the string bettor pushed all-in after some thought. EP ended up calling with KQ and Mr. Stringbet was happy.

Until he flipped over his cards and realized he misread his hand. Instead of the all-power (and potentially winning hand) 64o, he was actually holding the inferior hand of 62.

Lesson learned and the rail will be his companion.

Philadephia Flyer taking on WSoP Champ

Being a Flyers fan, you would think I would have mentioned earlier that Philly right-winger Scottie Upshall made it into Day 2 and has spent the day starting across the table at WSoP Champ Jamie Gold.

I told media row that I thought I could take Upshall in a fair fight and they still haven't stopped laughing.

End of Level 10

The second level of the day has ended and we've lost nearly a third of the field that started Day 2. 207 players are left when they come back from their break.

- 2006 WSoP Main Event winner Jamie Gold is alive and staying under the radar.
- 2005 WSoP Main Event runner up Steve Dannenmann is amongst the chip leaders early.
- 2008 WSoP Main Event media darling Tiffany Michelle was amongst the chip leaders until she lost a monster pot set over set.
- 2007 WSoP Pot Limit Omaha Champion Robert Mizrachi is still moving up but sitting at a difficult table with JC Tran and Brandon Cantu.
